The Season
New Year's Eve in Cabo, Privately: Midnight on the Bay
·6 min read
New Year's Eve in Los Cabos arrives at the height of the peninsula's finest season. The days are dry and clear, the evenings cool enough for a light layer, and the first whales of winter have begun to pass the cape. In Cabo San Lucas, the marina fills, the bay glows with the lights of anchored yachts, and the town turns toward the water for midnight. For those who would rather see all of it without standing in the middle of it, the most rewarding way to spend the night is privately: from a terrace above the Pacific, or from a deck at anchor with the whole bay in view.
The shape of the holiday week
The week between Christmas and New Year is the most requested of the year in Los Cabos. The finest villas are often reserved many months ahead, and the best-placed yachts are spoken for well before the holidays begin. Those who plan early tend to arrive a few days before the 31st, which allows the party to settle into the house, find the rhythm of the water and treat the evening itself as the culmination of the week rather than its whole purpose.
The weather rewards the effort. Late December brings warm, settled afternoons and calm mornings at sea, while the nights are cool enough that dinner outdoors calls for a wrap. The sun sets a little before six, so an evening on the water can begin in daylight and pass through dusk long before midnight.
Midnight on the bay
Cabo San Lucas marks the turn of the year over its bay. In recent years the town's celebration has taken the form of fireworks in some years and drone shows in others, staged over the water near Medano Beach and the marina. The program varies, and its details are usually confirmed only in December. Whatever form it takes, the setting is the same: a crescent of beach and harbor, the cliffs toward Land's End, and the lights of the town reflected on calm water.
Ashore, Medano Beach and the marina are where the town gathers, and on the night itself they are crowded and loud in the way of any great public celebration. From the water, the same scene is held at a distance. Yachts take up their positions in the bay through the evening, and from an aft deck the view takes in the beach, the town and the sky above it, with dinner already served and nowhere else to be.
Spending the evening at sea
A New Year's Eve charter is composed differently from a day out. It usually departs in the late afternoon, spends the last of the light along the coast toward the arch, and settles at anchor in the bay as evening falls. Dinner is served aboard, the pace slows, and the yacht holds its position for midnight before returning to the marina, or, for those chartering by the week, simply remaining where it is. In the Marea fleet, the choice depends mainly on the size of the party.
For a larger gathering
Lady Katana, a 100-foot Maiora, welcomes up to thirty-five guests for the day and carries an onboard chef and a premium open bar, which suits a celebration with family and friends together. Sovereign, a 130-foot tri-deck motor yacht for up to twenty guests, pairs at-rest stabilizers, which keep the deck steady at anchor, with one of the peninsula's most celebrated onboard chefs; for a seated dinner on the water, it is a natural choice. The Leopard 112, a collector's sport yacht for up to twenty guests, brings a Miele galley and a theater-size cinema screen to a more theatrical evening.
For a residence at sea
For those who would rather spend the holiday aboard than visit, Rising Dawn, at 141 feet with six staterooms and a crew of nine, and As You Wish, the 164-foot flagship with seven staterooms and a crew of eleven, are chartered by the week and each sleep twelve. A week aboard either places New Year's Eve in the middle of a longer passage, with the sundeck jacuzzi as the place to watch midnight.
For a smaller party, Contessa, at 85 feet and welcoming up to eighteen guests, offers an intimate evening on the bay. Each yacht is presented, with current details, in the fleet. Holiday availability and terms are confirmed directly with our concierge, and are best discussed early.
Or from a terrace above the water
Not every party wants to spend midnight afloat. Some of the most memorable evenings on the peninsula are spent at home, in a staffed villa with a chef in the kitchen and the bay or the Pacific below. In Pedregal, Villa La Datcha, ten bedrooms on the beachfront with three chefs and six butlers included in the stay, is scaled for a multi-generational gathering of up to twenty. Villa Bellissima, on the Pedregal cliffside, sleeps eighteen and gives its terraces to long views of the ocean. Along the Corridor, Villa Cielito in Chileno Bay sleeps sixteen and opens onto a swimmable beach, which makes the first morning of the year an easy one. Each appears in the villa collection.
A villa evening can still include the water. A yacht can collect the party for the afternoon and sunset and return them to the house for dinner, or the evening can be reversed: dinner at home, then a late departure for midnight on the bay.
The evening becomes the culmination of the week rather than its whole purpose.
Dinner, composed
The most sought-after tables on the 31st are committed early. Our concierge holds priority reservations across the peninsula, from El Farallón and Cocina de Autor to Flora Farms, Acre, Sunset Monalisa and Nobu, for the evenings out during the week. For the night itself, many guests prefer to dine where they will see in the year, with a menu written for the party by a private chef aboard or at the villa: the Sea of Cortez on the plate, the wines of the Valle de Guadalupe, and tequila or mezcal poured at midnight. Our note on dining at anchor describes how such a menu is composed.
The rest of the week
The days around the New Year carry their own pleasures. The whale-watching season opens on December 15, and the holiday week often brings early humpbacks close to the peninsula; a morning at sea with a marine biologist aboard is a fitting way to begin January. Our guide to whale season in Los Cabos sets out what to expect. Ashore, priority tee times at Quivira, Diamante, Querencia and Palmilla, in-villa massage and private yoga fill the quieter days, and arrivals at the private terminals at San José del Cabo, transfers and security are arranged within the same plan.
For a larger occasion, a milestone birthday or a family celebration timed to the turn of the year, The Celebration, one of the signature itineraries in Experiences, is orchestrated afloat and ashore for up to 150 guests, with full production and priority venues.
When to begin
The holiday weeks are the first to be committed each season, for villas, yachts and the crews and chefs who come with them. A conversation in the autumn leaves room to choose the house, the yacht and the shape of the evening; a later one tends to begin with what remains. Either way, the plan is held in one place, so the party simply arrives.
When you are ready, our concierge will begin with the party, the setting you have in mind for midnight and the days around it. Plan my charter, or inquire about New Year's Eve in Los Cabos.
